At The Terrain Research Hub (TTRH), Social Development Research stands as a cornerstone activity, dedicated to understanding and improving the multidimensional well-being of communities, particularly within marginalized or transitioning contexts. Unlike purely theoretical sociology, our approach is applied and participatory. We investigate how social structures, policies, and interventions affect real-world outcomes in health, education, gender equity, livelihoods, and social cohesion. Our work in this domain involves rigorous mixed-methods research—from longitudinal household surveys and randomized controlled trials to ethnographic case studies, grounded theory, and participatory action research. We partner with development agencies, local governments, and civil society organizations to generate evidence on what drives social change, how to reduce inequality, and which programs yield sustainable impact.
